Propecia (Finasteride) is prescription drug for treatment of male pattern baldness. Propecia should be taken only after medical consultation. Propecia Finasteride has been manufactured by pharmaceutical company Merck. It has been clinically proved that Propecia (Finasteride) works in a very safe manner for male pattern baldness. The drug is not indicated for use in pediatric patients.

 

Propecia (Finasteride) belongs to a group of medicines called “5 alpha reductase inhibitors”. It is a tan octagonal tablet, which is swallowed and is available in just one strength - 1mg. It blocks the enzyme, Type II 5 alpha-reductase, and in doing so it reduces the level of the hormone in the scalp which shortens the hair growth cycle and allows hairs to revert to a normal growth cycle. It stops further hair loss and increasing new hair growth in men with male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). Continuous use once a day for 3–6 months is required before benefit is seen and effects are reversed 6–12 months after treatment is discontinued, so continuous use is recommended to sustain benefits.

 

Before initiating Propecia (Finasteride) therapy, you should have essential pieces of information about this generic drug. Let your doctor know if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Finasteride or to a similar medication such as Dutasteride (Avodart).Women and children should never take Propecia. They shouldn’t handle Propecia pills too as Finasteride can be soaked up through the skin.Pregnant women shouldn’t be exposed to Propecia as it may cause birth defects in a developing male baby.
